Nick is a naval historian working for Orkney Islands Council. Formerly head of collections and research at the National Museum of the Royal Navy, he is the author of Firing on Fortress Europe, Coastal Convoys, and The Kaiser’s Pirates.
His recent book Normandy: The Sailor’s Story, just published in paperback, is the first account of sailors' experiences during the Normandy campaign, and their vital contribution to Allied victory. Using personal accounts, after action reports, ship’s logs and a host of other resource material, Hewitt tells the story of Operation Neptune, a complex naval campaign which ensured the success of D-Day.
